Mirador Riglos - Loarre
Birds
of the “Mirador de Riglos” and adjacent sierras.
The
itinerary “Mirador de Riglos” is extraordinary for landscape
and for birds. At the limit between the Pyrenean mountains
and the Ebro valley the track leads you right to the
top of the huge limestone cliff, opposite the famous Griffon
Vulture colony. It offers a scenic view of the high red rocks
of Riglos. The landscape is varied and attractive for birds,
especially for rock-living species, raptors and warblers.
We
advise to drive slowly and to make stops and short walks to
observe the birds. The track is difficult to drive when wet!
Best is to park the car near “Castillo de Marcuello”
and to continue on foot to the Mirador. It is also recommended
to visit the nearby peak “Peña del Sol” (1280 m.) and the
four interesting places are indicated on the map: las Navas
reservoir, Loarre castle, San Cristóbal hermitage and warbler
paredise near Bolea and the surprising monastery built in
the rock wall behind the village of Aniés.
Most
interesting birds : Red Kite, Lammergeier, Griffon Vulture,
Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Red-legged
Partridge, Crag Martín, Black Redstart, Black Wheatear,
Blue Rock Thrush, Dartford and Sardinian Warbler, Red-billed
Chough, Raven, Rock Sparrow, Cirl and Rock Bunting (all year);
Black Kite, Egyptian Vulture, Short-toed and Booted Eagle,
Quail , Alpine Swift, Bee-eater, Tawny Pipit, Black-eared
Wheatear, Bee-eater, Orphean and Subalpine Warbler, Bonelli´s
Warbler, Southern Grey and Woodchat Shrike (breeding); Alpine
Accentor, Wallcreeper (winter); Common Crane (passage).
Other
wildlife : Red Squirrel, Wild Boar, Roe Deer, Spanish
Wall Lizard.

Stuwmeer Sotonera
Birds
of the Sotonera reservoir.
The
Sotonera reservoir is the most important wetland close to
the Pyrenees. Thousands of ducks and gulls winter here. Herons,
egrets and warblers breed in the reed fields while waders
can be seen on migration. There are always raptors around
as the Marsh Harrier and the Red Kite. The Sotonera is known
especially for the spring migration of the Common Crane. Up
to 40.000 birds use the northern part of the lake for resting
before they take off to cross the Pyrenees. The Holm Oaks
surrounding the lake are especially interesting for passerines
in spring.
We
advise to visit the area by car. Take time to make short walks,
to visit the Mirador “Corral de Antonié” and the dam
at Tormos. In the village of Montmesa there is a visitors
centre, ask for the key.
Most
interesting birds : Red-crested Pochard, Red Kite, Marsh
Harrier, Red-legged Partridge, Calandra Lark, Cetti´s warbler,
Dartford Warbler, Zitting Cisticola, Corn Bunting (all year);
Purple Heron, Black Kite, Quail, Bee-eater, Short-toed Lark,
Great Reed Warbler, Melodious and Subalpine Warbler, Woodchat
Shrike (breeding); wildfowl (winter); Osprey, Common Crane,
waders (passage).
Other
wildlife : Red Fox, Badger, Wild Boar, Brown Hare, Perez´s
Frog, Parsley Frog, Viperine Snake.
